Computer Tips

Simple Computer Maintenance Every Business Owner Should Do

You don't need to be an IT expert to keep your business computers running well. These simple maintenance tasks take minutes and prevent the most common performance and reliability problems.

Most computer problems that bring businesses to a halt are preventable with simple, regular maintenance. You don't need technical expertise for any of these — just a few minutes each week and month.

Weekly Tasks (5 Minutes)

  • Restart your computer — don't just sleep it; a weekly restart clears memory, applies pending updates, and prevents performance creep
  • Check that Windows Update has no pending critical updates
  • Empty the Recycle Bin — deleted files continue to use disk space until it's emptied
  • Close browser tabs you won't return to — each tab uses memory

Monthly Tasks (15–20 Minutes)

  • Check available disk space — if C: drive is below 15% free, clean up temp files
  • Run Disk Cleanup (search for it in Start menu) to remove system files, temp files, and old updates
  • Check Task Manager for programs consuming excessive CPU or memory that shouldn't be
  • Verify your backup completed successfully — don't assume, confirm
  • Update any software that prompts you for updates (browsers, Adobe, Java, etc.)

Quarterly Tasks

  • Clean keyboard and screen with appropriate materials
  • Test restoring a file from your backup — confirm backup is actually working
  • Review startup programs and disable anything unnecessary
  • Check that antivirus definitions are current and last scan was recent
